As the youth group packed their things, the mothers ducked into an empty conference room to talk with my staff. With eyes downcast, the mothers began to tearfully confess their fears. They wanted to thank my staff for opening their eyes to their own racism. My staff listened patiently. But just as they started to approach something close to forgiveness, another white parent, a father, entered the room. He immediately took over the discussion. He shared that the first thing he had done when they arrived in front of our building was call the local police department and ask if it was safe for white people to be here. He then noted his disappointment that there was no “welcoming committee” offering them safe passage for the fifteen feet between the bus and the building. As he continued to list his grievances, he started referring to me in the third person as “the director” though I was sitting two feet from him. “You mean Austin?” one of the apologetic parents interrupted. “Who is Austin?” he replied, and then continued to list all the other things “the director” had done wrong.
